A 17-year-old driver and the Jeep she was behind the wheel of narrowly avoided an unintended swim in the Long Island Sound on Mother’s Day after smashing through a guardrail and landing on a wooden floating dock. As luck would have it, a nearby security camera caught the whole chaotic sequence.

In the video, you can see the silver 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee doing its best impression of an off-road vehicle as it careens up a curb, demolishing the fence at the edge of a pier in Port Jefferson. As the SUV drops onto the floating dock below, it spins to the left and somehow sticks the landing. If things had played out a bit differently, though, it could have easily tipped over and ended up in the water below.

According to a report from the NY Post, the teenage driver accidentally hit the accelerator while navigating the pier. Local firefighters responded quickly and were able to extricate the teen, who was then taken to a nearby hospital with only minor injuries. The Jeep had to be secured in place with several strong rope lines before it could be removed by a tow truck.

Both the pier and the floating dock sustained damage in the accident. Not only will the guardrail need to be replaced, but the force of the Jeep slamming into the dock also punctured a large hole in the wood that’ll need to be fixed. Hopefully, the driver and the car were insured at the time, because if not, they’ll likely be hit with a hefty repair bill.

As for the Jeep itself, it’s looking worse for wear. It’ll definitely need a new bumper and, likely, some suspension repairs to get it back in shape.
